(Clarinda) -- A surprising state championship from 60 years ago was officially enshrined in the KMA Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday afternoon.

Ken Hughes and John Woolson represented the 1956 Clarinda cross country state champion at the annual Clarinda XC Invitational, as KMA Sports held its first Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Hughes, Woolson and Jerry Carlson ran second, third and fourth to score nine points and win the Class A state championship, ahead of West Des Moines Valley. It was just the second year of cross country at Clarinda, and the first time Carlson ran with the team.

"I don't know if we expected the result," Hughes said, "but we certainly weren't going to turn it down."

KMA Sports documented the special induction and talked with Hughes and Woolson following the ceremony (video below).
