Meet the On-Air Staff

Mike Peterson has been a news anchor/reporter at KMA since February, 2000. A Fremont, Nebraska native, Peterson graduated from Cal State Los Angeles in 1986, then returned to the midwest, where he landed his first radio job at KILR in Estherville in 1987. He then joined KSIB in Creston in 1989, and served as news director there for 10 1/2 years before coming to KMA.

During his career, Mike has won several awards in the Iowa Associated Press, Iowa Broadcast News Association and Northwest Broadcast News Association contests. On April 30th, 2011, Mike became the IBNA's 40th recipient of the prestigious Jack Shelley Award. The IBNA's highest honor, the award is given annually to a person who has made "an outstanding contribution to the cause of professional broadcast journalism in Iowa."

Mike's wife Mary is a special education instructor at Shenandoah High School. They have two daughters--Abby and Anna. Off the air, Mike has appeared in several Southwest Iowa Theatre Group and Clarinda Community Theatre productions.

Derek Martin has worked with KMA Sports since September of 2008 and currently serves as KMA's Manager of Sports Operations. Derek started his broadcasting career in high school when he worked part-time at KDSN Radio in his hometown of Denison. After graduating and receiving a degree in communications at the University of Iowa; he once again worked at KDSN Radio as Assistant Sports Director and an Account Executive. After spending a year at KDSN he moved on to KWMT in Fort Dodge and worked in both news and sports calling baseball and softball for the Gaels of Fort Dodge, St. Edmond. Six months later Derek came to KMA to get back to his passion of sports broadcasting. In the past, Derek has worked and written for the Huskers Illustrated website as well as Iowa Preps.

When he's not out broadcasting games Derek enjoys sports, sports, and more sports and spending time with his wife, Morgan, and sons Turner, Hudson and Duncan....while watching sports. He ranks his favorite teams in order as the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Kansas City Royals, and the Dallas Cowboys - a combination of longtime suffering and sweet championship bliss. If sports aren't on his television then you'll probably see The Office, WWE Monday Night Raw, or Real World/Road Rules Challenges.

Ryan Matheny joined KMA full-time in June 2015 after serving as an intern/sports color man for two years.  Ryan currently works as KMA's Multimedia Content Manager.  He is in charge of all content on the radio and at kmaland.com and serves as a news reporter/anchor, as well as co-host of KMA's Friday Night football coverage.

A Shenandoah native, Ryan graduated from Shenandoah High School in 2011 and attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he received a Bachelor’s in Broadcasting with a Communications Minor.  Previously, Ryan served as the General Manager for UNO’s MavRadio where he was also the voice of Maverick Hockey and Baseball.

In his free time, Ryan spends most of his time watching sports, mostly baseball.  His favorite teams are the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Lakers and, of course, the Nebraska Cornhuskers! 

Ryan currently lives in Glenwood with his wife Kelli, Nala (cat), Auggie (dog) & Wrigley (dog).

Trevor Maeder

Trevor Maeder joined KMA full-time in Fall 2019 after serving as a sports intern since 2016. During Trevor’s internship, he covered multiple high school sports, Including an astounding 102 events during the 2018-19 sports season. Trevor currently serves as KMA's Sports Operations Coordinator.

A Villisca native, Trevor graduated from Southwest Valley High School in 2015 and received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Sports Media from Northwest Missouri State University in December. During his tenure at Northwest, Trevor served as the sports director for KZLX, Northwest’s student station. Trevor also worked at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa while in college and assisted with weekly announcing and public relations duties at the racetrack.

During his free time, he enjoys reading and playing video games and taste-tests the area’s finest cuisines. Trevor is an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and NASCAR. 

Trevor lives in Shenandoah along with his wife Gentry, his dog Moose and his cat Catrick Mahomes.

Ethan Hewett

Ethan Hewett joined KMA full-time in July 2021. Fresh out of school, Ethan currently works as a multimedia journalist for KMA.

A native of Red Oak, Ethan graduated from Red Oak Community High School in 2016 and received a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Communication with a Minor in Music from Truman State University in 2021. While at Truman, Ethan served as a weekly sports host and called a variety of Bulldog’s sports at KTRM, Truman’s student radio station.

During his free time, Ethan spends the majority of his time watching sports or squeezing in a round on the golf course. His favorite teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Missouri Tigers.

Ethan currently resides in Red Oak, IA with his family.
